How to Choose a Logo Style for Your Brand
Wordmark, lettermark, badge or icon? A quick, practical guide to picking the logo style that fits your brand — with examples and file-format tips.
Picking a logo style is the first real branding decision you will make — and it shapes everything after it. Here is a practical way to choose, without the jargon.
The five logo styles
- Wordmark — your brand name in a distinctive typeface (think Google). Best when your name is short and worth featuring.
- Lettermark — initials or a monogram (like IBM). Great for long names.
- Icon or symbol — a standalone mark. Powerful, but usually earned once you are recognisable.
- Combination mark — a symbol plus the name together. The safest, most flexible choice for a new brand.
- Badge — text inside a shape or emblem. Perfect for a heritage, craft or hospitality feel.
How to decide
Start with a combination mark if you are unsure — it works on a website header and a storefront alike, and you can split the symbol out later. Choose a badge if you want a hand-made, established look. Choose a wordmark only if your name can carry the whole identity on its own.
Get the file formats right
Whatever you choose, keep a vector version (AI, EPS or SVG). Vectors scale from a favicon to a billboard with no loss of quality — raster files (PNG, JPG) do not. A good logo pack gives you both.
